They talked more about the security situation. Kel listened to Gavros’ assessments about the ME and felt comfortable to ask more questions. Gavros held up a finger to pause Kel, then placed his nearest hand over Kel’s resting forearm.
“Kel, first I have another matter I wish to discuss.”
I’m kind of glad to be done with the meester thing, honestly, Kel thought.
“I have daughter. She is wonderful girl. She is soon to start university.” He paused a second to see if Kel was following along with his discussion.
“Her dream is to go to Liberinthine and attend university in capital of Republic. You can make this happen for her, yes?”
Kel looked the general in the eyes and nodded. “Yes. We can make that happen.”
When Kel had first been accepted into Dark Ops there was a long period of initial training. The majority of it was not the physical culling of a selection; legionnaires were selected for DO because they’d already been through those extensive processes. Most of the training was exposure to new concepts, familiarization with the best technologies and equipment. Orientation to a bigger picture of things. “Need to know only,” type-things.
He remembered the day he’d sat in a secure room with two other leejes for a briefing from an unidentified individual in a tailored suit. Republic Intelligence. No one had to go through the unnecessary and clumsy step of introducing the briefer. Some things went without saying. That’s how it was.
The briefer spent two hours as Kel and the others were read in on several programs run by RI. Classified programs. When they were done, Kel couldn’t help but feel that his favorite holoaction and spy dramas from childhood had been permanently ruined for him. Most of what he’d previously thought mystical became ordinary.
Kel was able to promise Gavros that he could get his daughter accepted to a university on Liberinthine. Dark Ops may have been at the Republic’s beck and call, but when Dark Ops needed a favor done, the Republic made it happen. There was a program for that. Its mechanisms were the mundane stuff of everyday business, mechanisms greased by social ties, loyalty, and of course, money.
Most of the Republic’s governmental structure was composed of analysts and bureaucrats. Within that pool were people with the same social, school, and family ties. The same strata of society intertwined throughout the administrative halls of the universities.
Among those powerful admissions officers were personnel on the payroll of the Republic. Money alone did not motivate them. It was a deeper confluence of motivations. When an old school-friend, someone from that government agency—“you know which one”—called you to ask for help with the admission for a “friend of the Republic, someone important to us,” it took advantage of several instincts.
Firstly, the person asking for the favor was usually an old friend. You’d been in the same club or organization together. You’d clinked glasses together at all the right parties. The person asking for the favor was not a stranger. It wouldn’t do to let him down.
